Staff Software Engineer, Classification & DiscoveryVerified as a real position

- Employment type
- Full-time
Who we’re looking for
- Production experience with Kafka and OpenSearch in high-volume, latency-sensitive environments.
- Strong familiarity with protobuf and contract-driven development across multiple teams.
- Working knowledge of telemetry protocols including syslog, SNMP, ICMP, and OTel, and the ability to reason about what real network environments look like from the data they produce.
- Deep understanding of system and network topologies, network design, and how infrastructure components relate to each other.
- Strong cloud and systems knowledge across at least two of AWS, Azure, and GCP.
- Demonstrated ability to own architectural decisions in ambiguous problem spaces and drive them to durable outcomes.
- Track record of cross-team technical influence, including driving alignment on shared contracts or platform boundaries.
What you’ll do
- Own the monitoring service API and UI end-to-end, including architectural direction, system design, and long-term roadmap ownership.
- Surface the full hierarchy topology, from company down through account, site, probe and collector, group, device and host, service, and sensor or check or metric, and the dependency topology between devices and services.
- Deliver discovery and inventory management views, including Host Discovery (the billable inventory layer) and System Discovery (correlated summaries of the components that make up a system).
- Own the onboarding flow for adding new sources and the screens to create, edit, and review alert history via the alert service.
- Drive the design and implementation of topology visualizations that are genuinely performant and navigable, addressing a recognized weak point across competing platforms.
- Define the data contracts and consumption patterns between the monitoring product and the upstream classification, telemetry, and alert services.
- Establish technical patterns for how the UI renders and interacts with complex, hierarchical network data at scale.
- Identify and resolve cross-team dependencies early, and hold the line on contract quality between the monitoring product and the services it depends on.
- Mentor engineers on the team and raise the standard for what production-grade, domain-aware full-stack work looks like at CommandLink.
- Takes on additional responsibilities and projects as needed to support the success of the team and organization.
About the position
This role owns the monitoring product at its highest level of accountability: the API and UI that customers use every day to understand their network. The incumbents in this space, SolarWinds, Zabbix, and others, have set a low bar with dated, overcrowded interfaces that obscure more than they reveal. The opportunity here is to build something genuinely better: a monitoring experience that is clear, fast, and grounded in real network topology rather than flat lists of devices and metrics. As a Staff Engineer, you own not just the implementation of that surface but the architectural decisions that determine how it scales, how it consumes the classification and telemetry layers beneath it, and how it evolves as the platform grows. This is full-stack work with a strong network domain emphasis, and it requires someone who can think clearly about both system design and the user-facing experience it produces.
